Legion XIII – Triumph

Legion XIII: Triumph
Or the One In Which Titus Pullo Breaks My Heart

So the last couple weeks haven’t been my finest. For several reasons, and I’m not going to get into them in detail or anything because, well, not the time or place for that. But, things are getting better and I’m getting back on track. though this week’s recap is going to be short and dirty because I’m running out of time.

I will say, though, I’ve caught up with what is happening on Rome and I’m not a happy camper.

This week’s recap is basically this: Everyone is fucking insane and Titus Pullo has broken my heart. That’s about the gist of it. Here’s the  Wiki summary on the episode if you want to read that)

After the episode, I was IM with Bron and we have developed our own head canon about Pullo and his behavior. See, I have an issue with how his character is being portrayed. There are times he seems almost childlike–when he’s worried about his mom not recognizing him in the afterlife–but hen this episode you get this explosion of violent behavior. Immediately following it he’s VERY childlike, and really, Vorenus is almost parental here. He even pulled the “I’m disappointed in you” card. Pullo apologizes again and again, and that too, in my opinion, seemed very childlike and seemed as though he didn’t realize the magnitude of what he’d done.

While I get that he likely has the attitude that killing a slave isn’t that big a deal–because we’ve seen in the show that as a culture, slaves are barely consider people (or not even considered such at all) — his actions and reactions seem to be more than that.

So Bron and I discussed this and she pointed out — head injury. Remember when they basically sawed his skull open? So our head canon (ha! no pun intended) is that Pullo’s erratic behavior — childlike moments, violent outbursts, etc — is a result of that. Not that he wasn’t impulsive or even violent before, but this just seems much different. So there you have it, our head canon, and I’m sticking to it.

My favorite part of the episode: I really don’t have anything to put as a favorite part in this one. Seriously. So I will say my favorite part is that I was back to watching Rome with Jen and Bron and everyone after being away a couple of weeks.

My least favorite part of the episode: A LOT. But the biggest thing? Pullo killing Eirene’s lover. Again, broke my heart and I have yet to recover.

Favorite costume: I’m going for comfort and simplicity this week, because that’s what I want. Though, as much as i love the simple shift Octavia is wearing, i could never pull it off, but I would want to.maxresdefault

Team Atia or Team Servilia, and why: NOT Team Servilia. My sympathy for her has completely run dry. The way she treats Brutus (Basically, I’ve a new son now in Pompey’s boy, so run along)…and puts him at risk–major risk–is horrible.

I don’t know that I can be firmly on Team Atia. I’m wondering what is up with her and climbing into bed with Octavia at the end. I mean, on one hand, a mother happy to have her daughter back… But this is ATIA. Her kids are tools for her to use, and while I think she loves them as much as she could, she doens’t do anything out of love for them. If she does something, there is a purpose. So WTF is the purpose here; what is she up to?

I don’t know whether I can be Team Anyone in this show….

Favorite watch-a-long tweet:

What hairdo or costume would Bronwyn steal? I’m thinking the scarves here. Either Atia’s or Octavia’s…And maybe Octavia’s hair…it’s pretty cool.

What made Jenny super happy? Mostly because I can hear her saying this, and I can’t think of anything that made anyone really happy in this episode (yes, I’m kinda pouty about this one, folks)

Bron’s take on “Triumph” | Jen’s take on “Triumph”

Next week, 2/8 at 9pm EST, we’ll be watching S01E11 “The Spoils”. We’ll be on Twitter with the hashtag #LegionXIII

  1. I always see willowy, ballerina type girls with those messy buns and loose camisoles like Octavia is wearing and I just look at my big, saggy boobs and linebacker shoulders and despair.
