Happy Wednesday, friends.

When we plan out the blog topics for the year, I'm always excited when a Behind the Scenes post comes around, and planning 2016 was no exception.

Now that we're here and it's time to write the post, though... "Can I be real a second? For just a millisecond?"

(Actually, my singing Hamilton lyrics is probably as good a look behind the scenes into my life right now as you can get - as my family can attest.)

Anyhoo... Truth is, as I posted about a short time ago, this year has been challenging for me as a writer, and I'm now just getting back to where I need (and want!) to be. So, sharing behind the scenes is a more difficult task than it has ever been, but I'm going to give it a shot.

My most current project is my next Bound book, Safeword Protected, so I'll share a bit about it and how as an author I"m connecting with it.

B6 - SAFEWORD PROTECTED

Clara Turner loves her life—her career as a travel writer takes her to places most people only dream of. But with the birth of her cousin’s first child quickly approaching, Clara happily trades her fast-paced adventures for the quiet Irish village to be there for the new arrival.

When Clara’s laptop acts up, her cousin decides to do Clara a favor and takes it to Niall Walsh, the village’s unofficial tech support. Clara panics at the thought of Niall—sexy, sets-her-lady-bits-tingling-from-afar Niall—discovering her secret stash of filthy kinkery living on her hard drive.

Niall lived the big-city life for years and dated the glamorous woman that came along with it before coming back home. He’s heard about Clara for ages, but nothing prepares him for the instant attraction he feels when he first sees her. He ignores it though—knowing she’s only there for a short time.

Besides, she’s the type of woman who fit in his past, not his present. He doesn’t have anything to offer that she’d want. At least, that’s what he’d thought…before he delved into her computer and discovered exactly what Clara likes. As he learns more about her, Niall realizes he can offer her something no one else can—the chance to explore her deepest desires instead of just watching on a screen.

It should be easy--a hot fling before Clara’s job takes front and center again--but when the time comes, will either of them be able to slip free from the bonds that now connect them?

Writing Safeword Protected? it's been both extremely frustrating and incredibly rewarding. The frustration stemmed for there "other stuff", not the book or the writing of it. I will admit something here that I'm probably not supposed to. As an author, I do have favorite characters. Don't get me wrong, I love them all , but there are some I just really, really love and seem to connect with. One day I may even share who tops the list, but for now, I will say Niall and Clara from Safeword Protected? They're pretty damned high on that list. No matter what chaos and...stuff was going on, whenever I could sit down and work on Niall and Clara's story... Well, it's pretty much this...

LetMeLoveYou

Grabby hands and all.

Why do I love them so much? Hard to put into words (You're an author, Jarman; get with the program!) Niall is a hot Irishman who is ready and willing to guide Clara though her initial exploration into the world of BDSM. So right there? Ticking some boxes, yeah? But there is something about the character that just makes me melt. I think I'll let Brody, Niall's best mate (who happens to be married to Clara's cousin) tell it:

“Niall is one of the most loyal and loving men you’ll ever meet,” Brody added, gaze intent on Clara. “He would do anything for the people he cares about. He came home for his family. He places people, especially people he loves and cares about, above anything else.”

A hot guy is all well and good, but finding something worthwhile when you delve beneath the pretty surface and push past the flaws - because he's still got to be real, right? Man's gotta have layers...

And Clara...she's very real. Has her faults, has the tendency to think things to death and often arrives at the wrong conclusion - usually the one that has her freaking out in a major way. There are times...

All right, I'm going to let you in on another secret, because we're behind the scenes and all. 😉 Readers aren't the only ones who want to wack some sense into characters, to just shake them until their brains come back online and they're making good choices. But that's good, right? Who wants to read a book about two perfect people with no conflict? It's that conflict, those mistakes that the hero and heroine make - the human element - that makes a story really work, isn't it? I think so. And over the years, the best piece of advice I've ever gotten has served me well in creating those real characters that I connect with and sincerely hope readers do, as well.

Trust the characters. Trust the story.

Not groundbreaking advice, really. I've heard similar things from pretty well known authors since I first had that knocked into my thick skull. But it took the right person at the right time to get me to see how necessary it was in the writing process. I still, with pretty much every book, have had those words spoken to me or have said them aloud to myself.

And that is it from me this week.

Make sure to head over to the blogs below to get a peek at what these incredible authors are working on. Also i want to welcome Torrance Sené to Wednesday Randomness blogging. Glad to have you with us. 🙂

Until next time,
~J

Well, 2016 is more than half over... Summer is coming to an end, with the older kids' classes beginning on Monday and the youngest starting high school the beginning of September. The year has been flying by, that's for sure. It's been a busy year - with the day jobs, a kid graduating, planning an exciting trip I'm taking with my mom, and more - and it's also a year of making big changes - tough changes but ones that will allow me to focus more on writing and actually getting books out. Took me a bit longer than I thought it would to get to this point, but it's all coming together, and I'm able to write more regularly now.

kermit Which is exactly what I wanted, so who cares how long it took, right? I'm where I want to be now, and that's what I'm focusing on.

So what can you expect from me?

Well, my next release will be a Bound book. I expect to release Safeword Protected this fall, and I'll announce a specific release date as soon as I can.

I'm also working on Into the Deep, book four in my Albion's Circle series. My original plan was to release this in September, but I've had to push that back a bit. It will definitely release this year, though.

It sucks in a big way to delay a release, and I hate doing it, so very much. But, I want to put out the best books I possibly can, and rushing the process (writing and editing and all that goes into getting the book ready for publication) isn't the way to do that.

So... a Bound book and the next Albion's Circle book in 2016. For 2017? Still in the planning stages, and I'll share what I can when I can,  but, for now, I can say Albion's Circle will come to a close early next year, and I'm very, very excited about that. That series has been and continues to be a labor of love for me.

And that's it from me for now, friends. 🙂
Until next time,

~Jess

Ten years ago, Morgan Weaver walked away from everything he loved—his burgeoning career as a composer, his cello, and his best friend, James. Family obligations and guilt keep him tied to a job he hates, and his dreams have collected even more dust than his instrument.

James Shepherd was left reeling when Morgan abandoned not only their dreams of writing and performing together, but their friendship. James forged on to become an internationally known musician, but he’s always felt Morgan’s loss and has never been able to shake the feeling that he’s responsible for the other man’s choice to leave everything behind.

A simple request from Morgan’s sister brings the men together in a way neither of them expected, and long-denied desire bubbles to the surface overwhelming them both. Knowing it’s only temporary, Morgan finds himself lost in a haze of submission, finally able to experience being at James’ mercy and determined to enjoy it while it lasts. James, however, has other plans and is equally determined to show Morgan he can have all he’s ever wanted—including what they have together.

Excerpt:

James stared at Morgan. His wide gaze kept darting between James’ eyes and his lips, and his expression bordered on desperation and need. It was a much better look than he’d had earlier. He’d only seen Morgan that defeated one other time, and he refused to let it happen, again—not if he could stop it.

He tightened his fingers in Morgan’s silky curls and tugged back his head. Giving Morgan all the time in the world to stop him, James slowly lowered his face, but once he touched Morgan’s lips, he was fucking lost. They parted on a gasp, and James wasn’t sure if it was the need for more air or to speak. All he knew was that Morgan’s mouth was open, and he was sweeping inside, tasting the smooth sting of scotch and the warmth of the man he’d never stopped wanting.

Morgan’s fingers clenched on James’ arms, but he didn’t push James away. Instead, he just hung on. James slid his other arm around Morgan’s waist and pulled their hips flush together. The groan that escaped Morgan’s lips as their hard cocks ground against each other was the most delicious thing James had ever tasted.

Anger slammed into lust, and he kissed Morgan harder, deeper, walking him backward until his back was against the wall. When James had come home and found Morgan dozing on the couch with his computer open and an empty glass of scotch, he’d lost it. He’d thought he was getting through to the other man—helping to pull him out of his self-imposed corporate prison. But leave him alone for one night, and he was right back fucking to it.

And the way Morgan had snapped at him had sent James’ emotions careening everywhere. Pride in the fact that Morgan had stood up for himself. Arousal that mixed weirdly with that pride. Worry for whatever had set him off in the first place, because James knew that, as explosively angry as Morgan had been, it hadn’t been directed at James—not all of it, anyway. And concern that this man he cared about was going to continue to trade his happiness for a life of misery and servitude. All of James’ emotions twisted together until the only action that seemed remotely sensible was to kiss Morgan like he’d been dying to since he’d shown up in his office less than a week ago.

He trailed his lips down the side of Morgan’s neck, nipping with his teeth, drawing shudders out of the man. His fingers convulsed on James’ arms, and every little bite drew Morgan’s hips forward in small sharp jerks.

“Jamie,” he breathed. “What are you doing?”

He kissed his way up to Morgan’s ear then sucked the lobe between his lips and flicked at it with the tip of his tongue before releasing him. “I’m doing what you told me to.”

“What…I—” His sentence ended on a gasp as James raked his teeth over that same bit of flesh.

James drew back a little so he could look into Morgan’s eyes. His pupils had practically swallowed the warm brown of his irises. James dragged the pad of his thumb across Morgan’s full bottom lip. “You told me to do what I wanted, remember?”

Morgan nodded, somehow managing to appear both desperately aroused and ready to bolt, at the same time.

“So, that’s what I’m doing.” James chuckled quietly as he tilted his head back and forth as he considered his next words. “Well, maybe not exactly what I want.”

“No?” Morgan’s voice came out rusty, as if he rarely spoke.

“Well, you’re not tied up and naked, and I’m not finding out all the pretty shades of pink your arse can turn.”

Morgan’s eyes dilated a little further, and his breath caught, his chest lifting and holding tight against James’.

“Nor is my prick buried balls deep inside you, so…no. I’m not doing quite what I want. Not yet.”

Morgan swallowed thickly. “Oh.”

“But I’m not going to do any of those things.” James thrust against Morgan, unable to keep his hips still.

Morgan thrust back, clearly needing more than James was giving him. “You’re not?”

James leaned forward and nipped the other man’s lower lip, pulling back slightly before releasing it. “Not yet.”

“When?” the other man choked out.

“Here’s the thing, Morgs… If this is going to make you run from me like it did last time…” His voice cracked a little on that last word as ten years’ worth of guilt suffocated him. “Make you run from the things that are most important to you, it’s not happening. Not now, not ever.”

Lips slightly parted and gaze hungry, Morgan shook his head.

James sobered. “If all I ever am to you is your friend, I’d rather have that than tonight… No matter how fucking hot I know it would be.”

Morgan met his gaze, and James couldn’t glance away if he wanted to.

“I’m not looking to pick out china patterns with you—you don’t need to worry about that,” James rushed to say. “I’m in no position to be in a relationship. And, from what I understand, you’re in no position to be completely out.”

Morgan nodded slowly.

James ached for the other man, hating that he felt he had to hide who he was, but James pushed it aside. That wasn’t up to him—it wasn’t his choice to make. He took a deep breath and pushed back to the conversation at hand. “But, no matter how hard I want to make you come…no matter how badly I want to feel your mouth around my cock, I’m not willing to be the cause of not seeing you, again, for another ten years.”

Morgan fisted the front of James’ shirt. “When’d you get so fucking noble?” Without waiting for an answer, he yanked James forward and captured his lips, pushing inside and taking his mouth as thoroughly as James had claimed his moments before.

He asks for a demon and gets an angel. Awkward!

Kei can’t believe his last ditch effort at stopping what could very well be the coming apocalypse has failed before it ever started. All because he messed up one spell. One awkward summoning.

From the moment the angelic man looks up at him from the within the sigil inscribed on the ground, Kei knows he’s in trouble. Blue eyes, smooth skin, and a body so perfect…it’s Heavenly. Getting involved with someone like that—no matter the physical pull—is nothing short of sinful. He just wished his soul cared enough to stay away.

Becoming lovers is the least of their worries. Darkness is on the horizon, and if they can’t find a way to stop it before it takes hold, humanity won’t be the only thing that falls from grace.

Rising Blood by Bronwyn Green

Vampire hunter, Harper Yovanoff, is not happy. Ever since her former partner vanished, she’d been content to work alone. Unfortunately, her boss doesn’t feel the same way. Harper’s been assigned a new partner—a new partner who’s an utter pain in her ass. Elliot Zielin is panty-meltingly gorgeous, but he’s also reckless, not to mention, insufferably arrogant. If he’s not careful, the vampires will be the least of his worries.

Elliot knows he should play nice with his new partner, but he can’t resist poking the bear—the tiny, angry bear who’s so freaking beautiful, she makes him ache for things he shouldn’t want. Despite the fact that Harper has a stake with his name on it, he keeps pushing.

When a powerful vampire begins actively stalking and turning hunters, Harper and Elliot are forced to work more closely together than ever in an effort to save their own. With tempers and adrenaline high, letting off a little steam goes way too far, and they both end up in a place they never expected. The threat against them increases and fighting their growing feelings for one another becomes impossible. But if they can’t stop the sire hell-bent on their destruction, all the love in the world won’t save them from becoming the very thing they hunt.

Tempted to Death by Jessica Jarman

Months ago, Tara Wilcox ran away from Luca Castell and Oliver Gordon. She’d fallen hard for the pair of hunters and feared their growing feelings for her. But what truly terrified her was the possibility that they’d discover what she really is. That she's the very thing they hunted.

Luca and Oliver are partners, in every sense of the word, and their lives are spent running toward danger. Falling for Tara was the biggest risk they’d ever taken, and her vanishing without a word gutted them.

But, she’s back, desperate for their help in hunting a vicious para creature. Despite the risks—to their lives and their hearts—reigniting the love they’d had is simple. But nothing is simple when, faced with an impossible choice, Tara reveals her true nature.

Now that Luca and Oliver know the truth, Tara has another choice to make—run again or trust that their love is strong enough to look beyond the monster she fears they’ll see.

Content Warning: Tempted to Death is an MMF ménage and contains depictions of MM intimacy and sex.

Grave Measures by Kris Norris

Not all souls go quietly.

After the brutal murder of his girlfriend thrusts Daniel Cartwright into the world of the supernatural, he’s finally adjusted to the reality that monsters are real. And not all souls cross over on their own. He’d thought banishing her spirit would bring him peace—allow him to move on. That is until her ghost returns—angrier than ever and hell bent on finally completing her mission. She wants Daniel to join her…and she’s not taking no for an answer.

Arrynn Baker has spent the past two years watching Daniel flourish into one of Threshold’s best hunters. Decisive, highly skilled—she’s proud to be his partner. There’s just one small issue… She’s fallen for the man. Hard. While she’s not opposed to taking him as a lover, she’s not convinced he feels the same—not with the distance he seems to maintain. The emotional walls he never steps beyond. Besides, mixing business with pleasure rarely ends well.

When a grisly new killing rocks both their worlds, lines get crossed, and Daniel knows he’s got a choice to make. Either be content with one night with Arrynn, or man up and jump in. But, if he wants a future with the woman of his dreams, he needs to deal with his past, once and for all. Even if the solution takes grave measures.

I had to juggle my release schedule around a bit - mostly because of stuff beyond my control, but it's still something I hated to do. So, I took a deep breath (or a hundred) and rearranged some things.

Meg meets the man of her dreams—gorgeous, dominant, and completely on board with a short-term fling—despite the fact he’s far too young for her.

It doesn’t take long before it’s clear she longs to experience sexual submission, and Nathan finds himself desperate to be the one she submits to.

Her days spent exploring the city, her nights exploring Nathan and the pleasure submitting to him brings, Meg discovers the trip she’d taken out of obligation has turned into something she doesn’t want to walk away from. Though neither want a relationship, once isn’t enough for either one of them. As their encounters become more intense, Rory makes a huge mistake that may cost him the woman he’s coming to love.
